Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

- the power of talking
Cognitive behavioural therapies, or CBT, are a range of talking therapies based on the idea that our thoughts, our feelings, our actions and how our body feels are all connected. By changing any one of these we can alter the others. When people feel anxious, worried or distressed they will often fall into patterns of thinking and acting which ultimately leave them feeling worse and, in the case of an addiction, will lead to a continuation of the addictive cycle. CBT works by helping the client to notice and change problematic thinking styles or behaviour patterns, which in turn will leave them feeling more positive and so lessen the compulsion to engage in destructive behaviours, such as substance misuse, unhealthy eating or gambling.

At the Phoenix Individual Retreat, CBT is delivered in 1:1 sessions with your psychotherapist over a number of meetings. During these sessions you will be encouraged to identify patterns of thought, feelings and actions that reinforce negativity in your life. You will then be given strategies for breaking these patterns which you will practise outside your therapy sessions, often keeping a journal or diary of your experiences.

You and your therapist will discuss your specific difficulties and set goals for you to achieve. CBT is not a quick fix – it involves hard work during and between sessions e.g. keeping track of what you are thinking, feeling and doing, or trying out new ways of thinking or acting. Your therapist will not make decisions for you. They will help you decide what difficulties you want to work on in order to help you improve your situation.

One of the benefits of CBT is that even when treatment stops, clients will continue improving because they have new tools in place and they've made behavioural and thinking style changes. As part of their Aftercare package, clients will be given a comprehensive suite of CBT tools and techniques which they can continue using in their daily life.
