Family & Systemic Therapy

- building healthy relationships
No-one lives their life in isolation. Both publicly and privately, whether at work or at home, we all have an impact on the people around us. We are all part of a wider network or ‘system’ and it is our interactions with other people are that make the system. Or not. Family Therapy (also known as Systemic Therapy) therefore seeks to work with clients not just on the individual level – as they will do through their other treatments at the Phoenix Individual Retreat - but also as people in relationships, dealing with the interactions of groups and their interactional patterns and dynamics.

Your Systemic Therapist will work with you and those within your network to try and find ‘patterns’ in the various systems you all share. For example, social gatherings can be seen as a system within a family. During this time, some family members may happily and confidently chat with each other, while others may sit in silence, resenting being asked anything. Others may argue, perhaps causing someone else to have to calm the situation and negotiate a peace. And this repeats at every social gathering, because all members of the system have developed different ways of relating to each other. In other words, developed patterns of behaviour.

As time goes by, these systems grow and change as different factors come into play. Perhaps, a child has become a teenager, but the parents still treat them as they would a younger child. The patterns no longer work, and the system becomes stuck. Your Systemic Therapist helps individuals adopt different positions, by looking at how different factors affect people within the system. They will help emphasise the strengths, resilience and resources available and how everyone helps contribute to the functioning of the system. The aim is to help everyone understand each other and to develop new ways to talk to each other.

This can help create an environment in which everyone supports each other, promoting health and wellbeing. During your stay at the Phoenix Individual Retreat, Family and Systemic Therapy may be used to complement your other, individual treatments. It can work with people in any form of relationship, for example:
  • Couples
  • Families
  • Groups
  • Carers
  • Professional groups
  • Teams.& Businesses
