Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy

- breaking away from negative thoughts
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a modified form of cognitive therapy which incorporates mindfulness practices such as meditation and breathing exercises. Using these tools, our MBCT therapists are able to teach clients how to break away from the negative thought patterns that can cause them to spiral down into a depressed state, enabling them to fight off depression before it takes hold.

Mindfulness is simply allowing the brain to be fully responsive to what’s happening around you. Enabling you to be fully present, aware of where you are and what you’re doing, and not become overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around you. This may seem simple, but the truth is it is all too easy to become distracted from the here and now. When this happens, your mind can take flight, meaning you lose touch with your body and, pretty soon, you’re full of obsessive thoughts about something that just happened or worrying about the future. And that, in turn, creates anxiety and can open the door to a relapse in negative behaviours (such as drug or alcohol misuse).

MBCT was originally developed for people with recurring episodes of depression or unhappiness, in order to prevent relapse. It has also been shown to be effective in treating generalised anxiety disorders and addictions. MBCT has also been shown to improve symptoms of depression in some people with physical health conditions, such as vascular disease and traumatic brain injury.

Feelings of sadness are entirely natural and, for most people, healthy. However, for someone who has overcome other psychological conditions or disorders, sadness can be a powerful trigger to relapse into harmful behaviours. Rather than try to avoid or eliminate sadness or other negative emotions, clients learn to change their relationship with these emotions by practising meditation and other mindfulness exercises. These activities re-balance neural networks, allowing the client to move away from automatic negative responses toward an understanding that there are other ways to respond to situations. By developing a routine meditation practice, clients can use the technique whenever they start to feel overwhelmed by negative emotions. When sadness occurs and starts to bring up the usual negative associations that trigger relapse of depression, the client is equipped with tools that will help them replace negative thought patterns with positive.

During your time at the Phoenix Individual Retreat, your Mindfulness Therapist will teach you meditation techniques as well as basic principles of cognition, such as the relationship between the way you think and how you feel. They will also give you activities to do during your free time, for example practising breathing exercises and mindful meditation.
