Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

- changing the way we think
Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is a psychological therapy which changes an individual’s thoughts and behaviours in order to help achieve desired outcomes or reach personal goals. It works by relating thoughts, language, and patterns of behaviour learned over time and through experience to specific outcomes.  NLP Therapy starts with the presumption that all human action is positive. Consequently, when a plan fails or the unexpected happens, the experience is neither good nor bad—it can simply be seen as a source of more useful information.

NLP is used in a variety of therapeutic scenarios, including the treatment of phobias, psychological anxiety disorders, addiction and improvement in workplace performance or personal happiness. The NLP model is based on the idea that we all operate according to our own internal “maps” of the world, which are constructed as a result of our own individual experiences and which determine how we perceive the world around us. The NLP therapist will work with the client to detect and modify any unconscious biases or limitations of an individual's map of the world and so help them address any underlying issues they may have.

Unlike, for example, hypnotherapy NLP works through the conscious use of language to bring about changes in a client's thoughts and behaviours. For example, a core feature of NLP is the idea that a person is biased towards one sensory system, known as the Preferred Representational System (PRS). The NLP Therapist will work with the client to detect their PRS through their use of language.

For example, if a client uses words such as "I see your point of view" this may signal a visual PRS. On the other hand, language such as "I hear what you’re saying" may signal an auditory PRS. Having identified the client’s PRS, it is then possible to build a therapeutic framework around it which may involve activities such as rapport-building, information-gathering and goal-setting.
