Behavioural Addiction
- a powerful compulsion

Behavioural addiction is a severe mental health condition in which a person engages in a particular behaviour over and over again, even when it begins to cause them psychical, emotional or financial harm. Gambling is the most widely known behavioural addiction, although other people find themselves addicted to behaviours such as shopping, computer gaming or even kleptomania (impulsive stealing).

Research has shown that, for behavioural addicts, engaging in that behaviour or activity triggers the release of the chemical dopamine, which causes feelings of pleasure. In other words, the addict’s brain is ‘rewarded’ for engaging in the activity although the brain soon becomes reliant on that behaviour to feel the heightened sense of reward.

A reduction in these dopamine surges leads to feelings of irritability and depression, which compels the addict to repeat the behaviour – for example to carry on gambling even when they have lost more than they can afford to lose - and so reinforces the cycle of addiction. This in turn often leads to secrecy, in an attempt to hide the behaviour, which can have a very damaging impact on personal, work and family relationships.

Additional problems of Behavioural Addiction

Many people with behavioural addictions will also suffer for other addictive behaviours, such as substance misuse. For example, research has shown that gambling addicts are 4 times more likely than the average person to suffer with an alcohol addiction problem and it is important any such co-dependencies are identified and treated simultaneously.

Like any addiction, behavioural addiction is no respecter of status, age, sex or wealth. Yet what makes the condition even worse is the stigma associated with it, which prevents many sufferers from seeking help due to fears about what other people will think of them.

This is particularly true for high profile or high achieving individuals, which is where the Phoenix Individual Retreat can help. We offer complete privacy and anonymity, as well as a place of sanctuary and safety where clients can receive treatment in luxurious surroundings, well away from the public eye.
Symptoms of Behavioural Addiction

  • An unhealthy interest in/preoccupation with the behaviour
  • A reducing ability to control the behaviour, despite the negative consequences becoming obvious
  • An increased tolerance to the behaviour, so it needs to happen more often or in greater intensity (e,g, gambling ever larger amounts) to get the desired gratification.
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms (which can include anxiety and depression) if the behaviour is avoided or resisted.

  Client Stories
The grim reality I grew up in a very strict household, where gambling was totally frowned upon, which is perhaps why it seemed so exciting when I first started betting and visiting casinos. For me, gambling started out as something glamorous – dressing up for a day at the races or an evening at the casino – and being able to shrug off losses whilst lavishly celebrating successes
A parent's story The first I knew of my daughter’s addiction was the day that the police came round and it was revealed that she had been using stolen credit cards to fund an on-line gambling habit that ran into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Our initial reaction was one of heartbreak and shock. She had never been in trouble before and had wanted for nothing.
