Sex and Love Addition
- emotional intimacy disorders

Although not measured or diagnosed by quantity – as substance addictions usually are – addictions to love and sex are just as real and can be just as damaging, with severe consequences for both the addict and for others.

Both love and sex addiction are emotional intimacy disorders and can be characterised by obsessive feelings and behaviours which the sufferer feels compelled to repeat, regardless of the consequences.

These behaviours and thoughts will typically get progressively worse, leading eventually to the breakdown of personal relationships and a repetition of the whole cycle. However, despite their similarities – both are addictions to unhealthy relationships - there are marked differences between the two.

Sex Addiction

A typical sex addict will be more attached to specific sex acts and sexual encounters than to people. In relationships they will tend to be detached, aloof and avoid emotional connection, leading to a preference for multiple, nameless and often interchangeable sexual partners

The sex addict will often engage in increasingly risky or inappropriate behaviours (e.g. excessive use of pornography or using prostitutes) in order to achieve the desired effect.

This will almost certainly place great strain on any close personal relationships, as well as lowering their own self-esteem.

Symptoms of Sex Addiction

  • Being obsessed with sexual behaviour or preparing for sexual behaviour
  • Spending unhealthy amounts of time on obtaining sex, being sexual, or recovering from sexual experiences – to the detriment of other aspects of their life
  • Needing to increase the intensity, frequency, number or risk level of sexual behaviours required to achieve the desired effect
  • Distress, anxiety, restlessness, or irritability if prevented from being able to engage in sexual behaviour

Love Addiction

A love addict, on the other hand, will typically have an uncontrollable need to feel loved. They will often become involved in unhealthy relationships with others. They will constantly try to please a person they become infatuated with, even if doing so results in harm to themselves.

Love addicts will often develop obsessions about other people and demonstrate obsessive behaviour, which can drive away the object of their affections, leading to relationship breakdown and repetition of the whole cycle.

Like sex addicts, love addicts also typically suffer from low self-esteem and may be incapable of making a commitment, meaning that they continuously move from one relationship to another.

Symptoms of Love Addiction

  • Being unable to stop seeing a specific person even though the addict knows that person is destructive to them
  • Getting "high" from romance, fantasy or intrigue
  • Having "relationships" in an attempt to deal with or escape from other problems in their life
  • Feeling uneasy or desperate when separated from their partner
  • A repeated pattern of very intense but short-live relationships

Impact of Sex and Love Addiction

Although very different in nature, relationship addictions can be just as destructive and harmful as relationships to substances (such as drugs or alcohol) or behaviours (such as gambling or shopping). And like any addiction, addiction to love or sex is no respecter of status, age, sex or wealth. Yet what makes both conditions even worse is that – like any addiction – there is a stigma associated with relationship addiction, which prevents many sufferers from seeking help due to fears about what other people will think of them.

This is particularly true for high profile or high achieving individuals, which is where the Phoenix Individual Retreat can help. We offer complete privacy and anonymity, as well as a place of sanctuary and safety where clients can receive treatment in luxurious surroundings, well away from the public eye. So if you, or someone you know, may have a problem with relationship addiction they need not suffer in silence.

Treatment for Sex & Love Addiction

Phoenix Individual Retreat was born from a single-minded vision: to provide clients with the most luxurious, confidential and effective treatment for addiction and other disorders. We offer a safe space, a sanctuary away from the pressures and stresses of everyday life in which clients can address their problems and create a pathway to a healthier and more fulfilled life. In other words, the chance to re-balance, re-focus and renew.

As part of the admissions process, each client receives a personalised Phoenix Pathway – a highly detailed plan setting out all aspects of their medical, therapeutic and psychological treatment – which is reviewed regularly throughout their stay at Phoenix Individual Retreat.  For many clients, this plan will cover a range of issues or disorders to ensure that they receive a truly holistic solution to their problems. For example, research has shown that gambling addicts are 4 times more likely than the average person to suffer with an alcohol addiction problem and it is important any such co-dependencies are identified and treated simultaneously.

At the end of their stay, clients will receive a detailed Aftercare Plan which ensures they remain in regular contact with the Phoenix team and are able to maintain and strengthen their recovery as they re-engage with their day to day lives.

  Client Stories
A new beginning Before I entered treatment at Phoenix my life was a complete mess. Since my late teens I’d stumbled from one hopeless relationship to another, always clinging desperately to the idea of love even when I knew relationships were toxic and making me unhappy. Above all I was embarrassed by my apparent inability to hold down a relationship.
Facing up to the facts What does a sex addict look like? That was a question I asked myself many times as I faced up to the fact that many of the problems in my life were due to my dysfunctional and inappropriate use of sexual relationships. The one thing I knew was that I was desperately unhappy with my life. I was working hard and, publicly,
